Champions League spot on the line as Juventus face flying Atalanta in crunch Serie A clash

Serie A top-four hopefuls Juventus travel to Bergamo to face seventh-placed Atalanta in Saturday night’s high-stakes showdown at the New Balance Arena.

The record-time Italian champions took advantage of Como’s slip-up on Easter Monday to close the gap to fourth place to a single point with a comfortable 2-0 home win over Genoa last time out.

Despite languishing narrowly outside the UEFA Champions League qualification spots, Juventus tied 67-year-old manager Luciano Spalletti down to a new long-term contract yesterday.

Spalletti, who joined the club in October to replace Igor Tudor, has pledged his allegiance to the Allianz Stadium until 2028, and his first assignment is to steer the Bianconeri to a third consecutive top-four finish.

Juventus have hit their stride at a perfect moment, winning three of their last four league outings without conceding (D1), including a narrow 1-0 victory at Udinese on their most recent top-flight road trip.

With only seven games left to play, the Turin giants must continue in the same vein if they are to avoid the ignominy of finishing outside the top four for only the fourth time since regaining top-flight status in 2007.

Stern test

Juventus’ triumph at the Bluenergy Stadium saw them put a stop to an underwhelming run of four successive away games without a win (D1, L3), with each defeat in that stretch featuring at least three goals conceded.

Ominously for Spalletti’s charges, Atalanta were among the sides to thrash them during that sequence. Indeed, La Dea hammered the Bianconeri 3-0 in the Coppa Italia at the start of February.

Recent trips to Bergamo have produced little joy, as Juventus emerged victorious from just one of their last five away league meetings with Raffaele Palladino’s side (D3, L1).

The visitors must flip the script on Saturday to keep their top-four hopes alive, though it’s worth noting that they’ve not won back-to-back away matches in Serie A since the beginning of January.

However, that could be easier said than done, given that Atalanta have pieced together a four-game unbeaten league streak in the build-up to this encounter (W2, D2).

Adding to the home side’s confidence, they boast a near flawless Serie A record at the New Balance Arena in 2026 (W5, D1), highlighting the size of the task awaiting Juventus tonight.

Must-win clash

Needless to say, missing out on Champions League qualification would be a major setback for Spalletti’s side and could significantly impact the club’s summer transfer plans.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, dining at Europe’s top table next term would massively boost Juventus’ chances of signing Manchester City stalwart Bernardo Silva.

With that in mind, a victory in Bergamo, where the Bianconeri last won a league game in May 2023, has all the makings of a defining moment in their push for a top-four finish.

Juventus can draw confidence from the fact that they’ve lost just one of their last 20 away clashes against Atalanta in Serie A (W12, D7), which starkly contrasts their recent fortunes in this fixture.

Spalletti’s men have claimed just a single win in their last 12 top-flight matches against La Dea (D8, L3), with four of their five most recent meetings played with both teams in the top seven positions in the standings ending all square.

Room for improvement

While they’ve been almost unplayable when drawing first blood, Juventus have shown little fighting spirit when chasing the game, picking up just one point from losing positions on the road this season (D1, L5).

For a side that had been synonymous with defensive resilience for the best part of the 21st century, conceding an average of 1.06 goals per away league match feels almost unacceptable.

As such, Spalletti must find a way to heal the Bianconeri’s travel sickness, and fixing vast defensive issues seems like a good place to start.

Just three clean sheets from 15 away league outings this season perhaps best illustrate the extent of their defensive frailties – a key factor behind their current position.
