Italian Football Federation make amendment on substitution rule ahead of season restart

The Italian Football Federation have confirmed that clubs in the Serie A and Serie B will be allowed up to five substitutions when the season resumes later this month.

No competitive football has been played in the country since the suspension on March 9 due to the coronavirus pandemic but the teams are gearing up for a restart with the fixtures already announced.

Earlier last month, the International Football Association Board approved FIFA’s temporary proposal to change the number of substitutions from three to five such that clubs can cope with the congested schedule after the coronavirus shutdown.

Still, the ultimate decision was left to the governing football bodies of the respective countries and the Italian Football Federation have agreed to the amendment for the rest of the ongoing campaign.

The Serie A and Serie B seasons resume following the coronavirus shutdown on June 20 and clubs will be permitted to make their five substitutions from a maximum of three intervals during the entire game.

Meanwhile, the semi-final and final stages of the Coppa Italia are expected to be concluded prior to the resumption of the league campaigns and there is a slight change in the rule for those matches.

While the three-interval rule will apply for normal time, the clubs would be permitted with a fourth interval to make a change in added extra-time, suppose they have not used up their substitutes.

AC Milan and Juventus drew 1-1 during the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final at San Siro and the second leg is expected to be played at the Allianz Stadium on either June 12 or 13.

On the other hand, Napoli beat Inter 1-0 during the opening leg of the other semi-final in Milan and they will have the home advantage for the return leg scheduled to be played next week.

The winners of those ties will contest the final at the Stadio Olimpico on June 17.
