Kalidou Koulibaly speaks on his Napoli future amid transfer interest

Senegal international Kalidou Koulibaly has said that he is content with his current position at Napoli despite the transfer interest from other European clubs.

The central defender joined the Naples outfit from Genk during the summer of 2014 and he has since made 251 appearances for them across all competitions.

Earlier this summer, the 29-year-old’s future came under question after the Serie A side were unable to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in five seasons.

Still, Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli clarified that the club wouldn’t lower their reported £100m price tag because of the COVID-19 pandemic and hence, the defender stayed put.

This has, however, not ceased the speculation regarding his future and of late, he has been linked with a possible January move to Liverpool, who are looking to fill the void left by Virgil van Dijk’s long-term knee injury.

In a recent interview with Sky Italy, Koulibaly was asked about his future plans and he reiterated that he is committed to Gennaro Gattuso’s side, where he has established himself as one of the best centre-backs.

He added to acknowledge the transfer interest from other teams and refused to rule out the prospect of pursuing a fresh challenge away from the Italian top-flight.

“I love Naples and Naples loves me, that’s the most important thing. I always make myself available game after game, I still have three years of contract,” He told via Sky Italy.

“I’m calm, the teams are looking for me but I’m still here. I play at my level and I help this team and these people because I want to give something back to them then we’ll see what happens.”

Koulibaly suffered a couple of injury setbacks during the previous campaign and that hampered his form over the course of the season as Napoli finished 16 points off the top four.

He has managed to regain his consistency at the start of the current season and has been part of the defence which has conceded just two goals (excluding the 3-0 forfeit win for Juventus) in five Serie A games.

Napoli are currently second on the table with 11 points, two adrift of leaders AC Milan.
