Napoli confirm renaming of their stadium in Diego Maradona’s honour

Serie A giants Napoli have confirmed the renaming of their stadium in the honour of club legend and former captain Diego Maradona, who sadly passed away at the age of 60 last week.

The Argentine made a huge mark for his country by starring in their 1986 World Cup triumph, but he is also fondly remembered in the Serie A where he spent seven seasons with Napoli.

Maradon led the Naples outfit to their only two Serie A titles (1987 and 1990). The forward also helped them win the Italian Cup (1987) and the UEFA Cup (1990), which remains their only major European silverware.

Shortly after the legend’s demise, club president Aurelio de Laurentiis stated that the club would rename their home ground in the Argentine’s honour and it has now been made official.

The club were able to get permission from the Naples City Council in a relatively quick fashion. The Stadio San Paolo will now onwards be officially known as the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Napoli will play their first game at the newly renamed stadium on December 10 when Real Sociedad make the trip to Naples for the final matchday of the Europa League group stage.

Prior to that, they have a league game against Crotone on the road this weekend. A victory over the bottom-placed side could take them up to second on the table, if the other results go their way.
